A Bit of History:
The Fred Cody Award & The Founding of Northern California Book Reviewers
& The Northern California Book Awards

Fred Cody was a book lover: a reviewer, and essayist. In 1956, he and his wife Pat Cody created Cody’s Books in Berkeley, an independent literary bookstore. Together, they encouraged the talents of many emerging Bay Area writers. In 1981, Fred Cody co-founded BABRA (now NCBR/Northern California Book Reviewers). As Peter Carroll—the author, historian, and book reviewer who came up with the idea—tells it: “I met with Fred on the day before Election Day 1980 (he was then reviewing for the Berkeley Monthly and I was at the Bay Guardian) and he agreed to participate. The next day I had lunch with Pat Holt (she was then Western Correspondent of Publishers Weekly) and she agreed to call a meeting&. She rounded up Bill Hogan from the Chron. He was skeptical, but said okay. We also had Mickey Friedman from The Examiner, Ron Nowicki from San Francisco Review of Books, Rita Fink from Pacific Sun. The first meeting was in December 1980. We later invited Diana Ketchum, The Oakland Tribune, Connie Casey, San Jose Mercury News, Wendy Lesser, Threepenny Review, Frances Starn, Berkeley Telegraph, the Contra Costa Times.&Joyce Jenkins, Poetry Flash came along with Emily Leider and Frances Mayes. Everyone had an affliation with a publication. Henry Mayer was the first freelancer.”

When Fred Cody died in 1983, BABRA created a lifetime achievement award in his name to honor northern California writers and literary figures with an important body of work. These award-recipients have enriched Northern California through their writings and literary activities, such as teaching, editing, and publishing; they have served their communities well through literature.
