Northern California Book Awards, April 13,
2008 Northern California Book Reviewers (Formerly the Bay Area Book Reviewers Association) NCBR, formerly BABRA, a volunteer coalition of book reviewers and book review editors who read passionately and write about reading, was established in 1981. The annual NCBR Awards honor the work of Northern California authors in Fiction, Poetry, Non-Fiction, and Children's Literature, and recognize exceptional service to the literary community and the broader public by Northern California writers and literary leaders. On occasion, special awards are made. NCBR considers all books written by Northern California authors. For this purpose, Northern California is defined from Fresno north. December 1 is the deadline for submission of books to be considered for nomination. There are no fees or forms. Three copies of each title may be sent to: NCBR, c/o Poetry Flash, 1450 Fourth St. #4, Berkeley, CA 94710. Membership in NCBR is open to book reviewers and book review editors who live in Northern California and support NCBR 's goals. Nominating members are responsible for the annual Awards Ceremony, and nominate books from those published each year by writers living in Northern California. Between September and February, the four committees (Fiction, Poetry, Non-Fiction, and Children's Literature) read books in their specific categories and select nominees. During this period nominating members may meet as often as twice a month. Voting members read the final books nominated in any or all categories, and along with nominating members chose the individual award winners. Friends of NCBR are non-nominating and non-voting members who support NCBR and/or help with the annual Awards Ceremony. Contributions to NCBR and to the Fred Cody Fund are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law; checks should be made out to Poetry Flash/BABRA.
