The
City of Emeryville is requesting
proposals from poets who live or work in
Emeryville to serve as the City’s
first Poet Laureate, 2010-2012.
Through establishment of a two-year
appointment of a City of Emeryville Poet
Laureate, the City Council desires to
bring greater attention to the literary
arts to the community, and to expand the
City’s support of a range of
creative endeavors. The selected poet must
live or work in Emeryville. The new
Emeryville Poet Laureate will act as an
advocate and resource for poetry in
Emeryville, present two readings each year
in Emeryville, and submit works for
publication on the City website and
elsewhere, among other duties. There is an
honorarium of $1,500 for the two-year
term.
The
completed application and materials
including work samples of published poems
or performed poetry on CD or Internet
links must be received no later than 5:00
p.m. on Wednesday, September 8, 2010.

Wordrunner Electronic Chapbooks is
accepting submissions for their
mid-September e-chapbook to be published
online at www.echapbook.com. Collections
of short fiction by one author will be
considered for the September issue.
Stories may be “flash” or
longer, from 600 up to 2,000 words each,
totaling a minimum of approximately 8,000
words and a maximum of 14,000 words for
the collection. E-mail manuscripts to
editor@echapbook.com with SUBMISSION in
the subject line. Attach only ONE FILE
(Word or WordPerfect or RTF), which
includes a title for the collection and a
list of contents followed by the stories.
Indicate which stories, if any, were
previously published and where.
Simultaneous submissions are acceptable,
but only one chapbook collection per
author. There is no fee for this open
submission. Deadline: e-mail entry by
August 28, 2010 (deadline has been extended!). Payment: $65. For further

Beyond BaroqueLiterary Arts Center has announced their first ever poetry contest. Postmark deadline: September 1, 2010. Prizes are $500 for first place, $250 for second, and $100 for third. The final judge will be Tony Barnstone, professor at Whittier College, NEA Fellow, and Pushcart Prize-winner. Submit up to three unpublished poems, (limit forty lines). All themes and styles are welcome. No ID should appear on poems. The poet's name, address, phone, e-mail address, and poem titles should be on a separate cover sheet. Mail poems, including $15 reading fee, to: Beyond Baroque Contest, 681 Venice Blvd., Venice, CA 90291. Please make checks payable to Beyond Baroque. No SASE necessary. Poems will not be returned. This contest is only open to California residents. A reading/reception will be held for the three cash winners and five top finalists at Beyond Baroque on Sunday, October 17, 2010.
National Favorite Poem Project has returned to Ukiah, California. The Poet Laureate Committee of Ukiah invites you to submit your all-time favorite poem. Fifteen poems will be chosen from these entries, if your suggestion is chosen, you will be invite to participate in a public reading to be held at Ukiah Players Theatre, 1041 Low Gap Road, Ukiah, on Friday, October 15, 2010. The poem must by by an author other than you, your friends or relatives. It should be a poem you have read, and to which you feel a personal attachment. No length requirements, but very short or very long poems are unlikely to be selected. Postmark deadline: September 23, 2010.
